Why Do They Keep Calling Me a Mormon?
If I asked some of my friends that attend a different church than I do if there was anything about me, my home or family that would make them think I’m not a Christian, they would said no. If you come to my home you will see multiple pictures of the Savior throughout the house. If you listen to my vocabulary you know I do not take God or Jesus’ name in vain, nor do I use cuss words, at least I try my best not to. If you see my behavior you know that I’m kind and serviceable, and try to help those who are down or in need. The thing that is misleading is the name, Mormon. Which is a nickname people have given members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They gave us that name because we believe in a book of scriptures titled “The Book of Mormon”. It is named that because it is a book of scripture an ancient historian named Mormon, compiled. He is much like the First Council of Nicaea. That council was organized by Constantine to compile the writings we know as the Bible. It was composed of a group of 300 religious leaders. The word “Bible” actually means “book”. We don’t call religious people who believe in the bible “Books”, or even “Bibles”. So why refer to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, as Mormons? I know it’s easier to say, but it takes Christ out of the picture, which is what we are all about. In fact if you read the book of Mormon, you will see that there is reference to Jesus Christ on EVERY page. How can a religion that believes in a book about Christ, not be Christian? We also believe the Bible is the word of God, as far as it is translated correctly. Who knows how many times it has been translated? Those who speak more than one language know there are many words that don't translate straight across. “ And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.”
This is one verse from the Book of Mormon. This is what we believe. We believe in Christ.
I know some of you are thinking, “at the end of the bible we have been told not to add to the scriptures.” But if you read this carefully you will see that John the Revelator was speaking only of the book of Revelation. Moses also said something similar in the book of Deuteronomy chapter 4 verse 2. He also restates it in chapter 12 verse 32: “What things soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
Do you really think that Moses laid down the law prohibiting all to write any future scripture? Did he have the power to silence all future prophets and forbid them from speaking or writing? If so then we wouldn’t have most of the Old Testament, and the New Testament wouldn’t even exist.
Another thing to consider is that when John the Revelator wrote what he did about not adding to scripture, the Bible was not even compiled, so he couldn’t have been referring to it.
Also scholars tell us that the Gospel of John was written after the book of Revelation. If this is true then it proves that John didn’t intend to end all scriptural writings. Just to protect this particular book of Revelation from change or corruption.
Before you pass judgment on to people because of a nickname, consider their true name. You should also consider listening to someone about what they believe instead of looking it up online. If you want to learn about any religion you would go to your local Minister, Pastor, Bishop, or even talk to missionaries about their church. You will learn so much more about a religion by going straight to the source, and you will get the truth. I don’t mind being called a Mormon, just know what you are talking about. Mormons are Christians, just like Catholics are Christians, Lutherans are Christians, Baptists are Christians, Jehovah Witnesses are Christians, and on and on. We may all believe in some different principles, but we all believe we should be following Christ, and that’s what’s important here.
